CONCERTO en Si by Roland Dyens for solo guitar and guitar ensemble

Tania Chagnot began learning the guitar at the age of 8 with Maurice Rosset at the Fresnes National School of Music. Two years later, she broadened her musical training by taking up the flute and the viola. In 1979, she completed her studies at the conservatoire, receiving a gold medal and a prize for excellence, awarded unanimously with the jury’s congratulations. In 1980, Tania Chagnot enrolled at the École Normale de Musique de Paris in Alberto Ponce’s class. There, in 1984, she was unanimously awarded the Diplôme Supérieur de Concertiste with the jury’s congratulations. Between 1981 and 1984, Tania Chagnot won first prizes at the Carpentras, Sassari and Rome International Guitar Competitions, as well as second prizes at the Toronto and Benicassim International Guitar Competitions. In 1985, she became the first French guitarist to win the prestigious Paris-Radio France International Guitar Competition.
Since then, she has given numerous concerts throughout Europe, as well as in the United States, Central and South America, Japan, Africa and the Middle East… She has also appeared on radio and television programmes.
Whilst Tania Chagnot acknowledges a genuine calling to promote the contemporary music of leading composers and to commission new works (Felipe Pires, Williams Montesinos), her artistic sensibility naturally leads her to present audiences with a wide range of the guitar repertoire, as evidenced by her discography: ‘La Guitare au XXème Siècle’, ‘La Guitaromanie’, ‘Oceanonox’, ‘Los Cuatro Elementos’, ‘Eric Penicaud’, Jean-Jacques Werner – 5 Cantatas, and Jean-Jacques Werner – Chamber Music.
Alongside her career, Tania Chagnot is also dedicated to teaching, which she regards as a mutually enriching experience and a necessary complement to any musical career. She obtained her State Diploma in 1993 and her Certificate of Proficiency in 1995. Since 1984, she has been teaching a guitar class at the Val de Bièvre Regional Conservatoire in L’Haÿ-les-Roses. In 2017, she was appointed to the Pôle Sup’93 and the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional d’Aubervilliers. She also taught at the École Normale de Musique de Paris from 2012 to 2017. Furthermore, she has been giving masterclasses and running summer courses since 1989.
Keen to promote the guitar, Tania Chagnot set up the association «Vous avez dit Guitare ?» to organise the Paris International Guitar Festival, the first edition of which took place in November 2003.
Published by Éditions Henry Lemoine and commissioned by the Tricastin Guitar Week, directed by Bernard Piris, the Concerto en SI is dedicated to Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, following in the footsteps of Bernard Piris. It is a work for solo guitar and guitar ensemble, structured in three movements, with a total duration of 27 minutes.
To mark the 35th anniversary of its creation, this concert will be dedicated to Bernard Piris, the work’s patron, who passed away in April 2026.

A brief history of the Concerto en Si :
Commissioned by the ‘Tricastin Guitar Week’, this tribute to Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco brought together more than twenty guitarists at its premiere in Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux (Drôme) on 1 May 1991. Wearing the dual ‘hats’ of soloist (guitar slung over my shoulder!) and ensemble conductor at the time, I retain from this noble experience a memory that was, to say the least, physically demanding – which allows me today to advise you, should you decide to perform this work, to delegate the entire conducting to a third party. That way, you’ll be able to concentrate fully on a guitar part as demanding as that of a concerto – which was far from being the case for me, particularly on the evening of the premiere.
But enough with the recommendations – let’s keep it brief: if you love rhythm, hyper-lyrical second movements and modal music, and if, on top of that, scordatura doesn’t put you off and you’ve got a good dozen daring and enthusiastic friends, then this concerto is for you. Quite simply.
